Trump reformats the military: No more transgenders, unvaccinated ones return

US President Donald Trump signed a series of executive orders on Monday to remove diversity, equity and inclusion from the military, to reinstate thousands of troops expelled for refusing to take the anti-covid vaccine, and to bar transgender people from the ranks of the military.

One of the executive orders signed by Trump states that expressing a gender identity different from the one an individual was assigned at birth does not meet military standards.

While the measure bans the use of invented pronouns in the military, it does not answer key questions, including whether transgender soldiers currently serving in the military will remain or be expelled.

Trump's plans have been sharply criticized by human rights groups, who say his actions would be illegal.

This is the second time Trump has taken such a step. He also banned transgender military enlistments in 2017, although current personnel were allowed to remain. The order was rescinded by Joe Biden in 2021.

The US military has 1.3 million active duty personnel, and it is estimated that there are 15,000 transgender people among them.

Newly sworn-in Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has promised to make major changes to the Pentagon, and has listed the removal of diversity and inclusion in the military among his key priorities. (A2 Televizion)
