Trump: US and Mexico will negotiate on tariffs

US President Donald Trump announced a 90-day negotiation period with Mexico, following a phone call with his Mexican counterpart, Claudia Sheinbaum, while he said the 25 percent tariffs would remain in place.

Trump said in a post on Truth Social that the conversation with Sheinbaum was "very successful, in the sense that we are getting to know and understand each other more and more."

He added that goods from Mexico imported into the US will continue to face a 25 percent tariff, which the US president has linked to fentanyl trafficking. Trump said the auto industry would face a 25 percent tariff, while copper, aluminum and steel would be taxed at 50 percent.

Trump said Mexico would end "non-tariff trade barriers," but did not provide further details.

Some goods continue to be protected from tariffs under the 2020 United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which Trump negotiated during his first term in office. However, the US president appears unhappy with the deal, which is expected to be renegotiated next year.

One of his first major actions after starting his second presidential term was imposing tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada earlier this year.

According to Census Bureau data, the US had a $171.5 billion trade deficit with Mexico last year - meaning the US bought more goods from Mexico than it sold to that country./ REL (A2 Televizion)
