President Donald Trump has designated the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua and the Mexican cartel MS-13 as foreign terrorist organizations, putting them in the same category as ISIS. In a speech to Congress, Trump said it was a major blow to the groups, which have been accused of violent crimes and drug trafficking.

Trump also praised Border Patrol agent Roberto Ortiz for his quick action and courage in dangerous situations while under fire.

Tren de Aragua, formed in Venezuelan prisons in 2014, has been accused of spreading violent crime and drug trafficking into the U.S. The group has grown rapidly and has become a major player in organized crime, with several reports of its activities in U.S. cities, including Aurora, Colorado.

The group is thought to have spread to the US after its members joined waves of migrants fleeing Venezuela due to poverty and political instability.

In the US, the group has been accused of violent crimes, extortion and drug trafficking.

Last year, the mayor of Aurora, Colorado, reported that members of Tren de Aragua had taken control of an apartment building in the city – a claim repeated several times by Trump during his campaign.  (A2 Televizion)
