The World Health Organization has responded to US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw the US from the UN health agency, saying it regrets his announcement.
According to foreign media, the WHO said it played a "crucial role" in protecting the health and safety of the world's people, including Americans, and hoped the US would "reconsider" the decision.
While signing his executive orders yesterday, Trump said the global health agency had mishandled the COVID pandemic and other international health crises.
He said the WHO had failed to act independently from "inappropriate political influence from WHO member states" and had demanded "unfairly heavy payments" from the US.
The move means the US will leave the agency in 12 months and stop all financial contributions to its work, writes A2 CNN.
The US, which was a founding member of the WHO in 1948, is by far the organization's largest financial supporter, contributing about 18% of its total funding. (A2 Televizion)
