Pope Francis' body in 'final residence', buried outside the

In a statement, the Vatican confirmed that the body of Pope Francis has been buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, which is located outside the Vatican walls in central Rome.

"The pope is the first in more than a century to be buried outside the Vatican and his funeral was a private event, allowing those closest to him to pay their respects," the statement said, foreign media reported.

At least 400,000 people gathered in Vatican City for Pope Francis' funeral and lined the streets to watch his coffin being taken to the Santa Maria Maggiore church for burial, according to Italy's interior minister, writes A2 CNN.

"We estimate that there are no less than 400,000 people present in St. Peter's Square and those along the street," Matteo Piantedosi told Italian news program TG5.

We recall that Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88, after suffering from pneumonia, a disease for which he was treated for several days in the hospital. (A2 Televizion)
