The Iranian national team has managed to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup, becoming the third non-host team to advance to the knockout stage.
This came after a dramatic 2-2 draw against Uzbekistan in the final match of the qualifying group in the Asian zone.
Although Uzbekistan was the more demanding team on the field, taking the lead twice thanks to goals from Erkinov and Fayzullaev, Iran showed character and managed to equalize through striker Mehdi Taremi, who scored twice for his team, keeping their hopes of qualification alive.
This result has mathematically secured one of the top two places in the group for Iran, giving it the opportunity to be one of the national teams that will compete in the 2026 World Cup, along with the organizers USA, Canada and Mexico, as well as Japan and New Zealand who have also secured participation in this global tournament.
Iran's qualification is a major achievement for Asian football and marks another important step for a national team with a rich history in international competitions. Iran can now focus on preparing to challenge the world's best in the summer of 2026. (A2 Televizion)
