Russia and Ukraine have reported attacks on their forces on the first day of a 72-hour ceasefire announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Andriy Sybikha accused Russia of violating the self-proclaimed ceasefire 734 times between midnight and noon on Thursday. He called the ceasefire a “farce” in a post on X.
Russian strikes hit northeastern Ukraine in the first hours of Moscow's unilateral ceasefire, killing at least one civilian, Ukrainian officials said. Artillery strikes were carried out along the 1,000-kilometer war front, although at a lower intensity than in the previous 24 hours, officials said.
The ceasefire coincides with the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany. Kiev has been seeking a longer-term ceasefire for the war Moscow launched against its neighbor in 2022.
Sybiha said Russia has carried out 63 attacks along the front line, adding that Ukraine has responded to them.
Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry accused Ukrainian forces of attacking Russian positions, adding that Russian forces will continue to respond to Ukrainian actions during the Kremlin's ceasefire.
Russia has reported overnight drone attacks in several regions, while Russia's civil aviation authority temporarily suspended flights from Nizhny Novgorod airport. (A2 Televizion)
