Ukraine unveils 'rocket drone', flies up to 430 miles per hour

Ukraine unveiled a new domestically-made "missile-drone" today, which it said can fly 430 miles per hour more than twice the longest range attributed to missiles supplied by Western allies.

According to foreign media, the unmanned craft, named "Peklo", which means hell in Ukrainian, is the second "missile-powered drone" unveiled by Kiev as it tries to increase its ability to strike deep into Russia. .

The drones could reach speeds of 435 miles per hour, a representative from Ukraine's state-run arms maker Ukroboronprom told reporters at a ceremony where they were officially handed over to the armed forces.

No other details were given and no evidence was provided about the drone's range or speed. Ukraine has disclosed some details of its arms industry, citing concerns about providing useful information to Moscow.

Ukraine's arms production minister said in November that the "missile-drone" can be seen as something similar to a cruise missile, which flies low on a path aimed at its target, usually at subsonic speeds.

The drones were more than a meter long, with small wings on either side and two 'feathers' on the tail. US-supplied ATACMS missiles have a stated range of just over 186 miles.

Russia has used thousands of long-range missiles and drones to strike military and infrastructure targets across Ukraine.

Kiev has demanded the ability to strike back, but its allies until last month resisted calls to allow their missiles to be used on targets deep inside Russia. (A2 Televizion)
