Turkish authorities have detained nine journalists - who were covering overnight protests in several cities against the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu - the Journalists Union of Turkey announced on Monday.
The reason for the detention of the journalists is not yet clear.
A Turkish court on Sunday ordered the detention of Imamoglu, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's main rival, pending trial on corruption charges.
Imamoglu's arrest last week has sparked the country's biggest protests in a decade.
Although street protests in many cities were banned by the authorities, for five consecutive nights citizens have held mostly peaceful protests against the Government.
The main opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), has called for protests against the court's decision on Imamoglu, describing the decision as politicized and undemocratic.
The government denies that the investigations are politically motivated and says the courts are independent.
Imamoglu has rejected the charges against him, calling them "unimaginable accusations and slander" and has called for nationwide protests.
In a speech during a demonstration in Istanbul, in front of the city hall, CHP leader Ozgur Ozel said on Sunday that they will continue the protests until Imamoglu is released.
