Two strong earthquakes were felt on Tuesday at 12:07 and 12:22 in the Naples area. According to data from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, the first had a magnitude of 4.4, while the second had a magnitude of 3.5, with the epicenter in Campi Flegrei. Italian media report that both are part of a wave of earthquakes that continued until the night. The earthquake, also felt in Naples, caused fear, especially in the Flegrean Municipalities, in Pozzuoli and other centers people took to the streets. Checks on buildings continue, while the government has declared a state of emergency in the Campi Flegrei area.
"The continuation of the seismic wave, which in two months has recorded three shocks that have been clearly felt by the population, suggests the need to continue with the declaration of a state of national emergency in the Campi Flegrei area," declared Minister for Civil Protection and Maritime Policies Nello Musumeci, at the end of a summit chaired in Rome.
Following the strong tremors, several schools in Naples and the Phlegraean communes have decided to suspend teaching activities, anticipating the evacuation of students. After the tremors in some schools, students and teachers left the classrooms and headed for open spaces inside the schools or on the streets. The same thing happened in the building of the Faculty of Engineering of the Federico II University of Naples, in the Fuorigrotta neighborhood, which is located a short distance from Naples' Campi Flegrei train station.
All earthquakes occurred at a depth of about 2.7 kilometers and the main shock was located offshore, at a point very close to the coast west of the Terra district.
The 4.4 magnitude earthquake was also clearly felt on the island of Procida, although no damage has been reported so far. As a precaution, all 500 students at the Capraro comprehensive school were evacuated. The students left and reached the assembly point, as required by safety protocols. The strong shock, whose epicenter was at sea, just off the coast of Pozzuoli, was also clearly felt on board a ship that had left the Phlegraean landing site a few minutes earlier and was heading towards Ischia.
After the tremors, the prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, immediately called the Relief Coordination Center at the Government Palace to assess the situation. The prefecture is constantly monitoring what has happened in the areas of the epicenter and in the immediate vicinity.
The mayor of Pozzuoli, Luigi Manzoni, appealed to people on social media: "A large seismic wave is underway. I immediately ordered all the Local Police patrols to take to the streets. Strong tremors that have inevitably frightened the population. I invite everyone to remain calm, to stay in open spaces, these are moments of great concern." (A2 Televizion)
