The first commander to fly around the moon dies

Former NASA astronaut Frank Borman, who made history as the leader of the first mission to orbit the Moon, has died at the age of 95.

Borman, along with his two colleagues during the "Apollo 8" mission, were the first people to see the "dark side" of the Earth's satellite in the 1968 expedition.

Agency Administrator Bill Nelson reacted to the loss by saying that Borman was one of NASA's best and a true American hero, dedicated to the job.

Apollo 8 was a seminal mission because it was the first time humans left Earth's orbit, losing sight of their own planet.

Frank Borman's career began in the Air Force in 1950, serving as a fighter, operational and instructor pilot.

His talent led to him being selected by NASA to instruct at the California Air Research Pilot School. (A2 Televizion)
