Austria makes the historic decision about Hitler's birthplace

The house and grounds where Adolf Hitler was born will be turned into a police station that will house up to 50 officers. This is the latest decision of the Austrian authorities, who showed on Thursday the plan for the transformation of the object.

The Austrian Interior Ministry's decision comes after years of debate over how to prevent the house from becoming a pilgrimage site for neo-Nazis.

Although Hitler was born in Braunau in 1889, Austria was the first victim of National Socialism, having been annexed by Hitler's Germany in 1938.

More recent governments, however, have admitted that Austrians were also perpetrators of Nazi crimes and that there was little resistance to Hitler's rule.

In 2011, Braunau grabbed the headlines when he stripped the Nazi dictator of honorary citizenship, even though he never actually enjoyed it. The city council at the time voted unanimously to strip Hitler of all honors he had received that had not automatically expired when he died in a Berlin bunker in 1945. (A2 Televizion)
