A devastating earthquake has rocked the mountainous regions of Tibet. Chinese media reports hundreds of dead and injured.
The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1 on the Richter scale and a depth of 10 kilometers, while the epicenter was a holy city. Seismic tremors were also felt in neighboring Nepal and some areas of India. Earthquakes are frequent in that region, which straddles the boundaries of large tectonic plates. Images released show destroyed homes and collapsed buildings, as rescue teams work through the rubble to find survivors.
Very low temperatures from minus 8 to minus 18 degrees Celsius are making their work difficult. There is a marked lack of water and electricity supply.
