Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reacted to the killing of two members of the Israeli embassy in Washington, outside the Jewish Museum in the American capital.
"Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is deeply shocked by the horrific anti-Semitic attack in which two members of the Israeli embassy staff in Washington were killed," the prime minister's office wrote in a statement, adding that Netanyahu received an immediate update on the details of the incident from Israel's ambassador to the United States, Yehiel Leiter, expressing his support for him and all embassy staff.
Meanwhile, US Attorney General Pam Bondi spoke with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, providing him with all available information on the attack in Washington that killed two Israeli embassy employees, emphasizing that President Donald Trump was directly involved in the management of the incident and that the United States will be committed to bringing the perpetrator of the attack to justice.
At a press conference, Washington Police Chief Pamela Smith said the victims, a young couple, were leaving the museum, which was hosting an event, when they were shot to death at around 9 p.m. local time. The perpetrator, who is now in custody, shouted "Free Palestine," she added. Washington police and the FBI are investigating the incident. The FBI's Washington office said there was "no ongoing threat to public safety."
It is suspected that the killer acted alone. "We believe that the shooting was carried out by a single individual. The suspect had been seen repeatedly walking in front of the museum prior to the shooting. He approached a group of four people, pulled out a handgun and opened fire, shooting the victims ," Smith said.
