A 30-year-old man who killed four University of Idaho students in the US in November 2022 has been sentenced to life in prison, after the mother of one of his victims expressed her disappointment that he will not be executed.
Bryan Kohberger, a former criminal justice student, initially denied the murders but later pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal that meant he would avoid the death penalty.
Kohberger secretly entered a rented house in Idaho, which is not far from the university campus, and killed Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves, A2 CNN reports.
Friends and families of the victims gave statements, speaking emotionally about the lives of those killed.
In court, Bethany Funke, who survived the attack, said of her roommates in a statement: "I hate that they're gone, but for some reason, I'm still here and I'm able to live. I still think about it every day. Why me? Why did I get to live and not them?"
Post-mortem examinations showed that the four people who died had been stabbed multiple times and were likely asleep when they were attacked, writes A2 CNN.
Kohberger has never revealed his motive, and it is not clear why he spared the lives of the two roommates who were in the house.
He was arrested at his parents' home in Pennsylvania a few weeks after the murders, following a nationwide manhunt. (A2 Televizion)
