Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has described his phone conversation with Donald Trump as "positive, sincere and very important." He said that lasting peace could be achieved this year.
"We agreed that Ukraine and the United States will continue to work together to achieve a real end to the war and lasting peace. We believe that together with America, with President Trump and under American leadership, lasting peace can be achieved this year."
Ending attacks on energy and other civilian infrastructure is "one of the first steps towards a complete end to the war," Zelensky said, adding: "I supported this step and Ukraine confirmed that we are ready to implement it."
Earlier, President Trump announced that the phone call between him and the Ukrainian president was positive and that much of the discussion was based on the conversation Trump had with Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.
The call was the first conversation between Trump and Zelensky since the two leaders clashed in the Oval Office 19 days ago, and came a day after Trump spoke with Russian President Vladmir Putin.
Putin rejected a full ceasefire during that call, but the US says talks will continue on Sunday.
