Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti has offered his condolences to the family of former President Hashim Thaçi, following the death of his father, Haxhi Thaçi.
"On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Kosovo and myself, I express my most sincere condolences to you, the loved ones of your family and friends of former President Hashim Thaçi," the condolence telegram reads. The condolence letter states that Haxhi Thaçi "will always be remembered for his wisdom, respect for others and great love for the country."
Haxhi Thaçi, who died on Sunday, was hospitalized at the University Clinical Center after being in serious health condition, KosovaPress reports.
On Thursday, he was visited by Hashim Thaçi, who was granted permission to visit by the Special Court, which is trying alleged war crimes, KosovaPress reports.
The special was criticized in Kosovo for not fulfilling Thaçi's requests to visit his sick father, stressing that such court decisions were unfounded and inhumane, KosovaPress writes.
After a visit of about three hours under strict security measures, Thaçi returned to The Hague - the Dutch city where this court is headquartered.
Hashim Thaçi is facing a protracted trial before the Kosovo Specialist Chambers – known as the Special Court.
He has been in detention since November 2020 on charges of alleged war crimes, KosovaPress writes.
His trial began in April 2023.
Along with Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi are also being tried. The former KLA leaders have pleaded not guilty to all counts of the indictment. (A2 Televizion)
