The outgoing European Union envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak, has been waiting for his successor, Peter Sorensen, to ensure a smooth transition of duty.
Lajcak announced that the handover meeting is in preparation and will serve to ensure a smooth transition of responsibilities.
Peter Sorensen, who officially takes office on February 1, replaces Slovak politician Miroslav Lajcak, who has served in the post for five years.
Sorensen has extensive diplomatic experience in European Union structures. He is currently Senior Advisor for Digital Diplomacy at the EU External Action Service (EEAS).
During his career, Sorensen has held several important positions in the Western Balkans, including:
EU Special Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina and Head of the EU Office in Sarajevo;
Head of the EU Delegation in Skopje;
Advisor to the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK);
EU Special Representative to Serbia;
Member of the OSCE mission in Croatia.
His rich experience in the region was one of the main reasons that Kaja Kallas, the president of the European Commission, decided to appoint Sorensen to this role.
During his five-year mandate, Lajcak brokered the Agreement for the Normalization of Relations between Kosovo and Serbia.
The agreement, which has not been signed, has been deemed legally binding by the EU, but its implementation has remained pending.
The European Union has criticized both sides for failing to implement the agreement, stressing that this will affect their EU integration process.
The dialogue for the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia, which began in 2011, has brought several agreements over the years, but most of them have not yet been implemented in practice. Kosovapress (A2 Televizion)
