Albin Kurti meets QUINT ambassadors, topics of discussion revealed

The acting Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, met with the ambassadors and diplomatic representatives of the QUINT countries, as well as the Head of the European Union Office in Kosovo.

Through a press release, the Prime Minister's Office announced that the main topic of the meeting was the process of Kosovo's membership in the Council of Europe.

"Prime Minister Kurti stated that Kosovo has already fulfilled the legal and institutional criteria to become part of this organization, as assessed by the Parliamentary Assembly and the rapporteur for Kosovo's membership," the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement.

The announcement further states that Prime Minister Kurti warned that further delays in membership are denying Kosovo citizens the right to access the European Court of Human Rights.

Kosovo was close to membership last year, but the issue of the Association of Serb-majority Municipalities left it off the agenda of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, when it was to decide on the country's membership in this organization.

The condition of several of its member countries, including France and Germany, was that Kosovo at least submit a draft statute of Western diplomats for the Association for evaluation to the Constitutional Court.

At the end of the announcement, it is stated that, among other things, the latest political developments in the country were also discussed.

After the meeting, British Ambassador Jonathan Hargreaves said they encouraged the rapid formation of institutions.

“This afternoon I met with the acting Prime Minister [Albin] Kurti along with other Quint ambassadors. I encouraged the formation of a new government as soon as possible, to act in the interests of Kosovo and its citizens, making progress on essential issues, such as the unblocking of funds and progress towards Euro-Atlantic integration,” Hargreaves wrote.

For several weeks, political representatives have been unable to constitute the Kosovo Assembly. So far, 14 sessions have been held, in which deputies have failed to elect the Speaker of the Assembly.

While Vetëvendosje is insisting on the election of Albulena Haxhiu as Speaker of the Parliament, this party has failed to secure the necessary votes.

After six failures in Haxhiu's vote, finally, the leader of the constitutive session, Avni Dehari, proposed a secret ballot.

But this action by Dehar was sent by the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo and several MPs from other parties for interpretation to the Constitutional Court of Kosovo.

With no way out of the impasse in the Assembly in sight, Kosovo's president, Vjosa Osmani, is expected to meet with political party leaders on May 15 in a new effort to form new institutions./ REL (A2 Televizion)
