In the midst of a political crisis that has engulfed the Kosovo Assembly, after several unsuccessful attempts to elect a new Speaker of the Assembly, the President of the Republic of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, has long expressed her full willingness to consult with the leaders of political parties, with the aim of overcoming the situation.
According to Bekim Kupina, the President's media advisor, he told KosovaPress that President Osmani, in an official letter dated April 16, 2025, addressed to the chairman of the Assembly session, Avni Dehari, offered the possibility of meetings and emphasized that she is open to consultations at any time, according to the needs of political parties.
According to him, the President remains committed to institutional dialogue, cooperation and coordination in the interest of the country's stability and the interests of the citizens of the Republic of Kosovo.
The Kosovo Assembly remains without a female speaker after four attempts.
This development comes at a time when the Kosovo Assembly has failed four times in a row in its attempts to elect Albulena Haxhiu as Speaker of the Assembly. Her candidacy, proposed by the Vetëvendosje Movement, has failed to secure the necessary majority of votes, despite the full presence of MPs in the sessions.
In the most recent session held on April 25, Haxhiu received only 57 votes in favor, out of 118 deputies present, while 47 were against and 3 abstained. This situation has caused an institutional deadlock and increased pressure for a political solution.
Otherwise, the Kosovo Democratic Institute (KDI) today asked President Vjosa Osmani to call a meeting with the leaders of parliamentary political parties to discuss possible solutions.
According to KDI, the Constitution charges it with the duty to guarantee the constitutional functioning of institutions, and in a situation like this – where the highest representative institution is blocked – its political and institutional engagement is justified but also necessary.
According to the statement, the lack of a serious effort for an agreement that secures a majority and the repetition of the same candidacy has turned this constitutional process into an empty formality that produces nothing.
