"No excuse", representative of UN Women in Albania: It takes 10 years
Michele Ribota, representative of UN Women in Albania

The 16 days of activism against gender-based violence is a call to action and a reminder that violence against women and girls is the most serious form of human rights violation worldwide! Michele Ribota, representative of UN Women in Albania, invited to A2 CNN spoke about the campaign launched in Albania against violence with the slogan "No Justification".

1 in 3 women in Albania have experienced violence at least once in their life.
Michele Ribota brought concrete figures regarding the cases of violence reported in Albania. He referred to the latest figures recorded in 2018, from which it was found that 1 in 3 women have experienced violence at least once in their life, however he emphasized that there has been progress in Albania. Here, he singled out the laws drafted both for prevention and for the protection of victims and the punishment of perpetrators.

"In Albania, the last figures were recorded in 2018, from where it showed us that at that time more than 1 in 2 women reported that they had been subjected to violence, at least one form of violence, once in their life, 1 in 3 women subjected to ongoing violence measured as something occurring in the 12 months prior to the study. This is a disturbing situation, more than 2/3 of women are subjected to violence during meetings, and all forms of control that partners have over women. There is progress, things are changing, the country has good laws, it has become part of international instruments. The country is in a good situation to have the necessary instruments.

250 million women are subjected to violence every day.
The numbers are alarming even in the world. 250 million women are subject to violence every day, be it physical or sexual. What is more alarming is the fact that even progress in eliminating violence is moving at a slow pace. Ribota, invited to A2 CNN, said that if these steps are followed, then it will take a 10-year-old to eliminate violence.

"The situation in the world is very worrying, every day about 250 million women are subjected to physical or sexual violence in the family, last year alone 50 thousand women were killed by their partner, ex-partner, by family members. More than 150 women who are killed by the hands of a man who is supposed to protect them. The elimination of violence and harmful practices such as early or forced marriages is our goal, if progress is at today's pace it will take 10 years to eliminate violence. While the community is committed to realizing it within 2023", he said

How can we achieve the elimination of violence?
To eliminate violence, a series of steps must be followed. Ribota emphasized that in this common goal, all links must work simultaneously. If one of them fails, said Ribota, then it is impossible to stop it.

"Countries must do certain things at certain times, look at protection, work with perpetrators of violence, work with prevention and do these things in a coordinated way. This is the approach we take with UNDP yesterday UNFPA and this is the spirit that is directed by local municipalities, by hospitals, police, education, civil society, unfortunately when you focus only on one pillar it does not work. In the draft budget that is being discussed, Albania has an increase of 8 billion lek that are for the treatment of these issues, money is needed to support women in need, legal aid, housing for survivors of violence. When it comes to prevention is that the protection system is efficient, secondly we seem to focus on the economic empowerment of women, not only in terms of women's participation in the labor market, but those who suffer from violence must work and work with men and boys and education. The work with men and boys is very big, on the one hand they respect them and on the other hand they also have a greater amount of work in the family", he said.

Expected results?
This 16-day campaign launched in Albania has 2 main goals.

"The campaign is a 16-day moment and then work begins for the rest, there is no excuse for violence against women, there are a number of activities that are being done in schools, with art and sports, it is a rich program, we expect support from the Council of Ministers of the second national plan for the resolution for peace for the safety of women and we also expect the creation of the guard against murder against women, because it is very important", said Ribota.

The meaning of the color orange?
Michele Ribota, representative of UN Women in Albania appeared in the studio with an orange scarf, which is also a symbol of this campaign, This color has a meaning.

"Orange is the color to mark a world freed from the fear of violence," concluded Ribota on A2 CNN.

This campaign will last until December 10, when it is also the international day of human rights. In this context, A2 CNN becomes the first media in Albania to sign the "Women's Empowerment Principles" (WEPs), a list of principles that serve as a guide for business, the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women in the workplace, in the market and in the community. This is a new standard that A2 CNN sets in the media market, serving as an example and guide for the industry. (A2 Televizion)
