Eurojust President Michael Schmid, speaking at the proceedings of the Chief Prosecutors' Forum in Tirana, praised the cooperation with the Western Balkan countries in the context of cracking down on criminal groups, which mainly engage in drug trafficking and money laundering.
"The Western Balkans region has been important, as Austria has historical ties with this part of Europe. The Western Balkans are an important partner for Eurojust. You are one of the main allies in many aspects, including in the fight against crime. To increase cooperation, as criminal groups work and cross borders. We think that the Western Balkans project is a success, to increase mutual trust, to increase cooperation between the Western Balkans and the EU. We have had many joint investigations into online fraud, hundreds of people have been arrested and numerous properties have been seized," he said.
Schmid stated that since the first forum organized by Montenegro, there have been many cases identified regarding online fraud, hundreds of suspects have been arrested, and a very large number of illegal goods have been confiscated.
"The four joint investigation teams from the Western Balkan countries have dealt with drug trafficking, counterfeiting of money and up to more than 50 cases have been supported that have involved your country. This is excellent work by the prosecutors that we have at Eurojust, the contact points, as well as the members of the contact groups, many of whom are here with us today and whom I would like to thank," added Schmid.
