Sea water has a sterilizing effect on the ears, unlike that of the pool. This was stated in Dita Jonë by ENT doctor Klevis Thomai, who suggests the beach in salt water. Speaking about the increasing ear infections associated with the summer season, the doctor emphasized that they are more of the outer ear.
"Except for some very rare cases for people with damaged eardrums, I do not suggest to everyone else that they avoid contact with water. It is very good for a small child to do 30 salt water baths even if they have an ear infection. It is better to bathe with salt water than to store it. Infections are more of the outer ear. More infections come from those in resorts abroad. Whereas in the pool everyone bathes and releases bacteria that our body has never been exposed to and it takes longer to react. You lose a lot of salts in the pool and not in the sea, you get dehydrated in the pool and this is very serious," the doctor said on A2 CNN.
But he rejects using earplugs to remove wax. According to him, this damages the ear canal.
"Everything we do to the ear to clean the wax disrupts the balance. Most people, by scratching, have destroyed the wax and there is no wax. In 95% of people, the ear cleans itself. Ear plugs are not ears, but toilet pins. They do not go into the eyes and ears. They traumatize the ear canal and hairs and infection can enter more easily, pushing the wax deeper. And it happens that over time the ear does not produce more wax."
On A2 CNN, he suggests that when they have mild or severe pain, and if medication is not possible, they can use a hand sanitizer that has 70% alcohol.
"When they have mild or severe pain, if there is no medication, it is enough to put a few drops near the wound, which is a sterilizing 70% alcohol. Boric alcohol is less than 70%, but not pharmacy alcohol, which is 90% and burns."
Likewise, exposure to loud noises and exposure to caffeine, according to Dr. Thomai, damages hearing, while some viruses damage the nerves.
"Exposure to loud noises, noises over 80 decibels damage the ear, a firearm is over 120 decibels, exposure to caffeine such as Pepsi, cola, Red Bull in high doses. Certain viruses, not when you have the flu, but when you hear noise in your ear, the nerve is damaged and never recovers. Headphones nowadays are a high risk in public. Over the age of 40, vision and hearing deteriorate, nerves deteriorate, a nerve that dies never recovers." (A2 Televizion)
