At today's meeting of the Council of Ministers, two acts were approved that pave the way for the extension of the validity period of identity documents for citizens residing within the territory of the Republic of Albania, for which this period has expired or ended on May 11, 2025.
"The approval of the normative acts is taken with the aim of guaranteeing the constitutional right of all citizens to vote without obstacles in the general parliamentary elections. According to this decision, the validity period of identification means, electronic identity cards and biometric passports that expire on May 11, 2025 - is extended until May 31, 2025," the Ministry of Interior announces.
The decision comes 24 hours after the Democratic Party, through Oerd Bylykbashi, requested the extension of the validity of identification documents, thus allowing 466 thousand citizens who do not have a valid document to vote on Sunday.
Meanwhile, in February, Normative Acts were approved, which paved the way for the extension of the validity period of documents for Albanian citizens in the diaspora, who are voting in elections for the first time, by mail.
The Ministry of Interior announces that in cooperation with the CEC, subordinate institutions, such as the Civil Status Service, or other agencies, have taken all measures to fulfill legal obligations, to ensure that the May 11 election process takes place peacefully and without obstacles for citizens abroad and within the borders.
The press release states that the State Police will switch to reinforced service to successfully handle the process before, during and after the close of voting, correctly implementing the law and obligations arising from the Electoral Code. (A2 Televizion)
