Former President of the Republic, Ilir Meta, asks the Supreme Court to release him from prison. Through lawyer Genci Gjokutaj, Meta has filed an appeal against the decision of November 19, 2024, which confirmed the security measure "prison arrest" against him.
Meta remains in custody while being investigated by SPAK for "corruption", "money laundering" and "concealment and non-declaration of assets".
In a statement to the media after filing the appeal, Gjokutja said that legally Meta should not remain in prison and whenever he is summoned by SPAK, he will provide explanations.
"Explanations in which there is no penalty. The procedure for lobbying has been clarified, we have clarified the declaration of Mr. Meta's assets and then for Cez Dia, a case that was based on false witness statements and evidence obtained in violation of the law. Under these conditions, we have addressed the Supreme Court to revoke the measure of arrest with imprisonment. Legally, Meta should not remain in prison. Whenever he is summoned by SPAK, he will provide explanations," Gjokutaj said, reports A2 CNN.
Bringing attention to the case of Sali Berisha, Gjokutaj appealed to the court to show integrity. According to him, the battle with justice will continue in Strasbourg, after the exhaustion of the courts in the country.
"History is not positive, the Supreme Court must show integrity that it has not shown to date. In such cases, they have made very serious mistakes, such as in the case of Berisha who was not allowed to go to the Assembly. Such mistakes that are a thing of the past do not make us positive. We will continue this battle. It is the same path that we followed with Mr. Berisha. We will move towards exhausting domestic courts to turn to Strasbourg if necessary."
