Kosovo's application for membership in the European Union has remained in the drawers of Brussels. The situation is not expected to change at least in the first part of the year when Poland holds the presidency of the Council of Europe.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland admitted that the possibilities are limited for the advancement of the status of Kosovo, citing as a reason, among others, the lack of recognition of the five countries of the European Union.
The lack of results in the dialogue with Serbia is seen as the reason for the lack of progress.
"This presidency of the Council of the EU, Poland] seems more sincere to me that it has informed Kosovo that if the political criteria are not met, especially with Serbia, which are practically related to the criteria of good neighborliness, there is no progress further Kosovo towards the European Union", said Arbnor Sadiku, an expert on international relations, writes A2 CNN.
The Government of Kosovo does not agree that the dialogue is an obstacle and they even say that the signing of the Stabilization Agreement is evidence that when the EU has the will, it can find the necessary consensus for the advancement of Kosovo's journey towards the union.
"Dialogue cannot be an obstacle or criterion for Kosovo's progress in the journey towards European integration, as long as our country is not the blocking party of the process. Moreover, the stage of Kosovo's and Serbia's journey towards the EU are not at the same level. Therefore, Kosovo cannot be blocked from the beginning", said Klisman Kadiu, adviser to the deputy prime minister Besnik Bislimi.
The government says they are ready to accept the questionnaire and give Kosovo the status of a candidate country.
They also emphasize that they have continuously worked closely and that they have been in contact with the EU Council Presidencies of the last two years, while the same is being done with the Polish presidency.
"The final decision-making does not depend on us, therefore there must also be the will on the part of the European Union that, in a process which is often emphasized as being based on meritocracy, precisely that meritocracy prevails, that our application be considered and evaluated seriously and Kosovo can show and prove its level of preparation and merit for obtaining the status of a candidate country", said Klisman Kadiu, adviser to the deputy prime minister Besnik Bislimi.
Kosovo blames Serbia for a destructive approach to the dialogue process and for constantly inciting tensions on the ground. However, concrete results will be required from both sides.
"From Kosovo and Serbia they will demand concrete results in dialogue and the fulfillment of further steps, no more theories, no more meetings through 'flying diplomacy' without any concrete results, only for face and face or for shaking hands in front of the cameras of Kosovo's citizens and Serbia as has happened so far", Sadiku said.
Kosovo submitted its application for membership in the European Union in December 2022, while it is the only country in the region that does not have the status of a candidate country. (A2 Televizion)
