At this Thursday's government meeting, the decision was made to close the TikTok platform.
The Minister of Education, Ogerta Manastirliu, announced that the restriction will be for a period of 12 months, while access will be suspended within a week.
"The government has taken a series of important decisions today. First, we have taken the decision to avoid temporary measures due to the negative decisions of the TikTok platform. We have conducted an extensive series of consultations with parents on the negative effects that social networks can have on children.
"We have decided on a temporary closure. Access will be cut off within a few days. Access restriction for a period of 12 months that will allow us time to take measures in coordination with TikTok representatives. It is a decision that focuses on the interests of children and young people," the minister said, among other things.
This government move came after the stabbing death of 14-year-old Martin Cani in Tirana by a peer, following a fight that started on social media. It was Prime Minister Rama who announced this government initiative and then it was put up for consultation with parents in schools in December 2024. Rama said at the time that the closure of this platform would take place in the first weeks of January, while the decision was made this Thursday by the Council of Ministers. (A2 Televizion)
