Volunteer policing returns, government approves decision

The Council of Ministers has approved the decision that determines the organization, functioning and scope of action of the volunteer policing service in support of the State Police structures.

This decision, proposed by the Minister of Interior and based on the Constitution and the new law "On the State Police" (no. 82/2024), aims to improve public security, strengthen the capacities of the State Police and promote the active involvement of citizens in support of law enforcement.

Volunteer policing is defined as a public service provided by qualified citizens who engage in auxiliary activities with local police structures. Any individual who meets the criteria and is accepted into this service is called a volunteer police officer.

According to the decision, a volunteer police officer can be engaged for up to 5 hours per day and no more than 25 hours per week. The relationship between the volunteer and the relevant structures will be formalized through a legal contract that defines the rights and obligations of the parties, in accordance with the law on volunteerism.

This initiative is considered an important step towards bringing the police closer to the community and increasing citizen cooperation in the fight against illegal activities. (A2 Televizion)
