Hospitals struggling for blood, National Donation Center in a

The National Blood Donation Center is struggling to meet the vital blood needs of thalassemia children and emergencies.

About 100 units are provided per day by this center, but more than half are family donations for planned surgeries.

Voluntary blood donations, which go to children with thalassemia and emergency cases from accidents, are still low.

The National Blood Bank has decided to go from municipality to municipality to ask for the help of citizens for voluntary donations. One unit of blood can save up to three lives. Meanwhile, for several years, the government has decided to reward every voluntary donor with up to two days of vacation.

The most critical levels of voluntary donations were recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, while the needs of thalassemic children did not change, 1 unit of blood every 2 weeks.

The greatest demand for blood is for the rare Rhesus negative blood groups.

Currently in our country there are about 7 thousand donors, but only 25% are volunteers, as the rest of the blood comes from family donations for planned surgeries. In European Union countries such as France and others, blood needs are covered 100% by voluntary donations.  (A2 Televizion)
