Joan Pelushi has been elected the new archbishop of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania. He was elected today by the Holy Synod, almost 50 days after the passing of Archbishop Anastas Janullatus. Meanwhile, his enthronement ceremony will be held on March 29.
This is the first time that the Synod has elected an archbishop, after the Orthodox Church was led for more than three decades by Anastasius.
The Holy Synod of the Church convened after the Divine Liturgy, which also coincides with the Second Day of Lent. Following the synod's decision, the new Archbishop will enter the Cathedral where he will also give a public message.
