Last year was not a good one for electricity production. From nearly 8.8 million megawatt-hours in 2023, hydroelectric, solar, and wind power plants produced about 7.8 million megawatt-hours of energy in 2024.
The production contraction is estimated at 10.9 percent. The situation was also affected by the production of energy from photovoltaic panels, with only 67 thousand 700 megawatts, writes A2.
Anduel Çekrezi, an expert on the energy sector, says: “Diversification is the key word for our energy system. We are 100% focused on hydro production. In the last two years we have added a small percentage to solar energy. Several wind generator parks are being built.”
Due to the increase in tourists, electricity consumption also expanded last year. Data from the Institute of Statistics shows that nearly 8.2 million megawatt-hours of electricity were used in the 12 months, up from less than 7.9 million in 2023.
Consequently, more energy was purchased from abroad. From around 1.9 million megawatt-hours in 2023, imports reached over 2.6 million last year, expanding by 38.9 percent.
Anduel Çekrezi, an expert on the energy sector, tells A2: "Businesses have been very interested during these times because businesses have almost doubled their energy costs and if a family pays off the initial cost in 5 or 7 years, a business pays it off in 2 or 2 and a half years. Institutions or the central government should deal with this part because we see in many countries in Europe that they have removed VAT for photovoltaic panels."
With reduced production and increased consumption, the electricity balance last year closed with a deficit of almost 334 thousand megawatt hours. On the other hand, data from INSTAT show that from 20.62 percent in 2021, the level of losses in the network in the year just left behind shrank to 17.93 percent. On the other hand, collections have expanded significantly in the last 4 years. (A2 Televizion)
