If you want to buy from abroad and use in Albania a used vehicle, manufactured before 2011, you should hurry! Soon, the country will no longer allow the registration of vehicles that do not meet the "Euro 5" standard of the European Union from "Euro 4 that is currently in force".
"The General Directorate of Road Transport Services has started discussions in 2024 regarding possible improvements to the levels of the legal basis and has also organized meetings with representatives of stakeholders and institutions. After 5 years, we estimate that it is time to switch to the 'Euro 5' standard", Arben Progni from the Directorate of Vehicle Registration told A2 CNN.
The devaluation of the euro on the one hand and the orientation of the import market towards South Korea, especially during the past year, is expected to make the establishment of the "Euro 5" standard in the import of vehicles easily applicable.
Data from the General Directorate of Road Transport Services show that in the past 12 months, 44.2 percent of vehicles registered for the first time were manufactured after 2011, while nearly 19 percent meet the "Euro 6" standard, reports A2.
"We, as DPSHTRR, will continue with the discussions and hope that the establishment of this standard will come into force from this year in order to influence the improvement of the vehicle fleet and reduce the level of air pollution."
During the last year, 99,441 vehicles were registered for the first time in the country. The period of spring and summer, especially the months of May and July marked the highest level of vehicles registered for the first time.
With the increase in imports as a result of tourism, the number of active vehicles in the country has reached 925 thousand.
"In 2018, the motorization ratio was 220 vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants, and today we are in the conditions of 400 vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants. There is a significant increase especially in the last year.”
Almost 9,000 kilometers geographical distance, a not at all traditional market in terms of history... South Korea has become the main source from which Albanians import cars.
Last year, the country in East Asia ranked first in terms of vehicle imports, with 18,827 vehicles, leaving behind Italy, Germany and Switzerland. (A2 Televizion)
