SPAK decides to take the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, as a defendant. A summons from the Special Structure sent to the Durrës prison, requests the mayor of the capital to be accompanied to appear before SPAK on Wednesday at 11:00. At the same time, a summons has also been sent to the mayor's defense lawyers.
Sources close to SPAK informed A2 CNN that Veliaj will be charged with "corruption of senior officials and local elected officials", "money laundering" and "concealing and failing to declare assets".
The communication of the charges changes the mayor's legal status from a person under investigation to a defendant. The sources did not specify whether or not the communication of the charges will be accompanied by the conclusion of the investigation launched against him and his co-defendants, or whether the investigation will continue even after the charges are made official.
On Tuesday, businessman Elman Abule, one of the suspects in the “Veliaj” case, appeared at SPAK, where he was charged with “money laundering.” Abule was accompanied by his lawyer and declined to comment.
Erion Veliaj has been in custody since February of this year. He has continuously made attempts to have the measure commuted, but without success. His last attempt was in the High Court two weeks ago, where he was unable to commute the measure of "prison arrest". (A2 Televizion)
