After the spring when traffickers plant cannabis plants, the beginning of summer is now the time when the narcotic plant has entered the growth phase. In recent days, the State Police has intensified field controls, from north to south, in collaboration with the Guardia di Finanza.
Hundreds of agents have landed on the ground in all 12 regions of the country, monitoring from the air with over 50 high-resolution drones. While where the terrain is difficult or where cannabis plants cannot be captured by intelligent drones, agents use helicopters.
Intensive controls are being carried out mainly in mountainous areas, where last year's analysis found the areas with the highest risk of drug cultivation. The police are focusing on the highlands of Shkodra, Dukagjini, the highlands of Kruja and Dibra, as well as the areas in Tepelena, Skrapar, Vlora and beyond.
Special focus is also being paid to indoor environments, because in recent years, traffickers have been growing cannabis in so-called 'weed houses'.
According to sources, during the field operations, 7 thousand cannabis seedlings and plants, as well as 2 thousand seeds, have been destroyed so far. Unlike previous years, this year a laboratory has been set up in Tirana to process the data that will be obtained during the controls.
Last year, 191 thousand cannabis plants were destroyed by joint monitoring throughout the country. (A2 Televizion)
