Venice Film Festival, from Putin to Camus and cinema classics

Alberto Barbera, artistic director of the Venice Film Festival, has revealed the program for the 82nd edition of the festival, which will take place from August 27 to September 6, 2025. A novelty this year is the participation of the arthouse platform Mubi, which opens the festival with Paolo Sorrentino's "La Grazia." François Ozon also returns to Venice with "The Stranger," an adaptation of the novel by Albert Camus.

In competition for the Golden Lion will be major films from directors such as Kathryn Bigelow, Guillermo del Toro, Chloe Zhao, Noah Baumbach, Luca Guadagnino, Yorgos Lanthimos, Olivier Assayas, Park Chan-wook and Benny Safdie. Among the most anticipated films are Safdie's "The Smashing Machine", starring Dwayne Johnson as a UFC champion, as well as "Bugonia", the latest collaboration between Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone, following their 2023 success with "Poor Things". Luca Guadagnino presents the psychological drama "After the Hunt", starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield, which will be screened out of competition.

The Netflix platform will be at the festival with three original films in competition: "A House of Dynamite" by Kathryn Bigelow, which deals with a national crisis in the White House; the comedy-drama "Jay Kelly" by Noah Baumbach, starring George Clooney; and "Frankenstein" by Guillermo del Toro, a remake of the classic created with actors such as Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth, writes A2 CNN.

Italy will present well-known films such as Gianfranco Rosi's "Below the Clouds" and the biopic "Duse" about the legendary actress Eleonora Duse, as well as three productions, including Marco Bellocchio's "Portobello" and the Netflix series "The Monster of Florence". France is presented with Olivier Assayas and his political film "The Wizard of the Kremlin" that explores the rise of Vladimir Putin, with Jude Law in the lead role, not avoiding current events and the most controversial political figures.

The main jury will be led by two-time Oscar winner Alexander Payne, while the festival program also includes out-of-competition films, documentaries and short films from renowned directors such as Sofia Coppola, Werner Herzog and Gus Van Sant. (A2 Televizion)
