A high-level meeting was held today at the premises of the Central Election Commission (CEC) between the State Election Commissioner, Mr. Ilirjan Celibashi; the Prosecutor General of the Republic, Mr. Olsian Çela, the Head of the Special Prosecution Office Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK), Mr. Altin Dumani, and the Director General of the State Police, Mr. Ilir Proda. The purpose of the meeting was to increase inter-institutional coordination in order to guarantee the integrity of the elections and strengthen the mechanisms for preventing and punishing any form of violation of the electoral law.
The focus of the discussions was on the joint measures that the institutions are taking to guarantee a peaceful, secure and credible electoral process in all its phases. Participants shared information on the concrete organizational and operational measures put in place to prevent incidents, pressures or attempts to illegally influence the will of the voters.
A topic of particular importance was addressing potential violations of the electoral law and their handling by the relevant justice bodies. During the meeting, data on the number of reports filed so far regarding actions or omissions that conflict with the Electoral Code were presented. The importance of timely response by the relevant institutions – prosecutors and police – to investigate any violation that could undermine the integrity of the electoral process and citizens’ trust in it was emphasized.
Also part of the discussions was the process of voting from abroad, a new and challenging component of these elections. Discussions focused on institutional preparations, logistics, the security of postal deliveries and guaranteeing the right to vote for Albanian citizens located outside the territory of the Republic of Albania.
The heads of institutions also visited the Operational Center for Combating Electoral Crimes at the CEC, where representatives from SPAK and the General Prosecutor's Office are attached. The coordination of the structures clearly demonstrates the commitment of state institutions to maintaining democratic election standards and guaranteeing the right to vote for every citizen, both at home and abroad.
