Socialist MP Milva Ekonomi, in the "Off the Record" studio, was confronted with the fact that citizens in Albania have consumed a shipment of chicken meat contaminated with salmonella, which came from Brazil.
Given that the infected meat escaped the filters of the National Food Authority and was released on the market, moderator Andrea Danglli asked the former Minister of Agriculture what is happening with food safety in the country.
"I believe that these cases are not cases that you don't see in other countries. They are cases that you see in Albania and in other countries," Ekonomi responded, but emphasizing that "what is important is how market supervision will react" in such cases.
According to the former minister, local authorities should strengthen the food surveillance system and this procedure will be further facilitated with the assistance of the European Union.
"In Albania, this is one of the things that I believe we need to strengthen more. And in the European Union, in chapter 13, there is food safety, there are rules that help us strengthen this food safety. And our surveillance system, if 13 years ago we only did 19 safety tests, today we do 1909 safety tests. That is, the attention to strengthening food safety is increasing and food safety laboratories have improved. But we need to strengthen surveillance a lot," Ekonomi declared in "Off the Record" by Andrea Danglli, on A2 CNN.
She further added that those responsible in such cases must be held accountable before the law.
"I don't think at this moment that there is no one responsible anymore, because this surveillance system is growing and is being demanded, because the people themselves are demanding it, the penalization system when you break a rule has been strengthened. I believe that now there are all the elements for even those who commit a small damage to be held accountable. Be it economic, administrative, or criminal liability," Ekonomi said on "Off the Record" by Andrea Danglli, on A2 CNN. (A2 Televizion)
