Prime Minister Edi Rama has stated that the previous government was thinking about the pension system today and had created the premises of a scheme that, according to him, was on the verge of collapse.
Rama made the comments at a meeting in Tirana called the 'International Conference on the Challenges and Ambitions of the New Pension System Reform for Albania 2030'.
Rama said during his speech that at the start of his first governing term, during a conversation, the World Bank's director for Southeast Europe had told him that the biggest priority of the executive led by him should be 'preventing the worst'.
He added that the Government today is ready to take responsibility for the demands of the elderly, but according to the Prime Minister, they are aware that at this point it would be fatal if they acted without a long-term action plan.
"The same thing has happened in the pension system, thinking today for today and creating the premises of a scheme on the verge of collapse. While the World Bank's director for Southeast Europe told me in the first meeting, 'your government's biggest priority is preventing the worst.'
Today, of course, we are in absolutely different conditions and we certainly feel, understand and take responsibility for the insistent demand of pensioners to participate in the most meaningful way in the distribution of the fruits of reforms and the overall growth of the economy.
"But on the other hand, we are very aware that it would be fatal for us to act at this point without a long-term vision and without a sustainable long-term plan. Because we would cause the same damage and consequences very similar to those caused by the actions that actually put us in front of an incomprehensible, absurd and dangerous pension system, when we undertook the reform in 2014.
