Prime Minister Edi Rama has responded harshly to British MP Nigel Farage, who recently stated that “1 in 50 Albanians living in the UK is in prison.” Through another public message, Rama challenged Farage to a showdown with real figures, accusing him of using false data to fuel a post-Brexit political rhetoric.

"Dear Nigel Farage, my Catholic grandmother often reminded me of a Latin proverb: Errare humanum est, sed perseverare diabolicum, to err is human, but to persist in error is diabolical," Rama wrote in a message in English to Farage.

The head of the Albanian government stressed that the figure used by Farage is ridiculous and distorted. According to him, even The Telegraph, the British newspaper that first published this report, has corrected it by admitting that the Albanian population in Britain is much larger than 53 thousand people, as Farage claims, and could reach up to 140 thousand. This means that in reality less than 1 in 100 Albanians could be in British prisons, writes A2 CNN.

Rama added that a large portion of the prisoners are convicted for issues related to the outdated immigration and visa system, and not necessarily for serious crimes.

"Albanians in Britain are not just a statistic that can be used as a pretext for political theatre after Brexit. They are students, academics, workers, entrepreneurs. If one in a thousand falls foul of the law, that does not make them all guilty," Rama wrote.

The Prime Minister invited Farage to visit Tirana to see the real data up close: "I welcome you as an honored guest, to share the sun, hospitality and real facts," Rama concluded on social media. (A2 Televizion)
