“A crossroads between democracy and autocracy.” This is how the Democratic Party’s candidate for deputy, Ilir Alimehmeti, describes the situation in which the country finds itself after the May 11 elections. In an interview with A2 CNN, Alimehmeti, who is one of the most voted candidates but who failed to win a seat in the Assembly, explains why he requested a recount of the votes. While denouncing that the CEC delayed providing the video footage to ascertain irregularities in the counting, he adds that he has again identified problems.
"A vote is a vote, citizens have voted for one candidate or another, one party or another. This should be read as it is, it is impossible in 2025 not to know how to count the votes. Can we count these votes properly? This is a matter of principle," Ilir Alimehmeti told A2 CNN.
In the document submitted to the CEC that was rejected by the KAS after the DP did not approve the complaint, Alimehmeti raises claims that many preferential votes for him were counted for other candidates, but again claims to A2CNN that he has no fight with anyone but seeks to establish justice.
"It has nothing to do with an individual or a particular party and so on. This is about the basic principle, the vote should go where it deserves and justice should go to the one who received that vote," he told A2 CNN.
There is still no desire to reflect on the vote among the Democrats, but Alimehmeti indicates that internal analysis is necessary to avoid repeating mistakes.
"There is absolutely always a need for analysis, there is a need to see what worked and what didn't work, so that things can be done even better. For many, the process is over, but for a small number of people we are still in the process, so when it is over we will have this full analysis, so these images are also needed for internal analysis, to understand what was done well and what was done badly. In order to go more properly into the next elections, because other elections will happen again, it is important that mistakes are not repeated," he told A2 CNN.
Ilir Alimehmeti claims that the elections were also damaged by the electoral system, which according to him has severed the connection between voters and elected officials. (A2 Televizion)
