The May 11 elections and the fear of electoral crimes and corruption, or the use of the state in these elections, has led the Democratic Party to address Chief Prosecutor Olsi Çela today. Democratic representatives, MP Oerd Bylykbashi and the political leader for the Korça region, Ivi Kaso, have asked the Chief Prosecutor to draft a plan of measures aimed at stopping or reducing these crimes. In a statement to the media after the meeting, Bylykbashi emphasized that this prosecutor's office covers the largest range of electoral crimes and should act now in a concrete way and not after the elections, reports A2 CNN.
"The dominance of the cases is covered by this prosecution and with a focus on the massive use of the state, the electoral state. The Prosecutor General is the one who follows these cases. We asked that the prosecutor have a clear plan of measures, now, without delay, so that we have efficient action and do not remain in the declarative aspects, especially after the elections. The legal framework gives the prosecution system great opportunities to proactively strike at electoral crime such as that which is happening here and in the diaspora. And what we expect is for it to act without hesitation. The time for words is gone, it is time for direct interventions by the prosecution. If there are effective measures, many people will be inclined to stop and not commit these electoral crimes."
Bylykbashi stressed that he has received a promise of commitment from Chief Prosecutor Çela, but according to him, people are waiting for the facts. He said that the opposition will provide the prosecution with concrete criminal reports and expects a crackdown after them, writes A2 CNN.
"The prosecutor exposed to us the difficulties that the prosecution system has in terms of efficient prosecution, but people want results. He promised us visible commitment. We await the facts and are ready to provide the prosecution with concrete criminal reports and we expect that after them there will be an effective blow to curb electoral crime. What will happen should not be what has happened to date."
Another concern that Democratic officials shared with the Attorney General is the involvement of the police in the elections, which according to Bylykbashi should be addressed. Meanwhile, the Task Force set up by SPAK for electoral crimes, according to the Democratic MP, is delayed, reports A2 CNN.
"Nothing that is just paper does anyone any good. We demand a plan of measures from the prosecution, what SPAK does is its own business. It has refused to deal with electoral crime, while it was built as a mechanism to strike at one of the most serious aspects such as vote buying. No one needs papers as long as there is no efficiency. They are too late, more than gnashing of teeth are the facts. How many people are punished for the crime of electoral corruption that has begun here and in the Diaspora? But as we demand from SPAK, we also demand from the prosecution and if this system will function with high efficiency, electoral crime will also shrink. This means that the prosecution must be above the head of the State Police. The police is also a politicized body that has been transformed into entire pyramids in the function of elections, and the police must feel the blow due to abuse of office, or any other involvement in electoral crimes."
