Costume design is considered one of the extraordinary values of Gjirokastra, which, combined with architecture, has made this city one of the most popular among tourists.
But, while you see folk costumes for sale or rent in various stores, the values of the latter risk being lost as a result of the disappearance of the elements that truly make these costumes characteristic of each region.
The renowned painter and costume designer from Gjirokaster, Stavri Çati, raises the alarm about the disappearance of the values of costume design.
"Today they say they make folk costumes, but these are stage costumes, for dances, for weddings or who knows what. Folk costumes have some rules: when they are sewn, how they are sewn, with what material and what motifs they have on them, which is the main thing."
According to him, there are even mistakes in the costumes placed in the Ethnographic Museum of Gjirokastra that need to be corrected as soon as possible. What is being lost in the folk costumes of Gjirokastra is fortunately reflected in the paintings that Stavri has made of all types of folk costumes representing different areas of Gjirokastra.
