Albanian football in the Champions League had a double-faced evening. On the one hand, Egnatia e Rrogozhina dealt a heavy blow to itself and the prestige of the Superiore, being shamefully eliminated in the first round. On the other hand, Shkëndija e Tetovës and Drita e Gjilani achieved historic victories, keeping the hopes of Albanian clubs in the European arena alive.
Egnatia, the Albanian champion, who seemed favored after a 1-0 victory in the first leg at home, was completely destroyed in the return match against the Icelandic team Breidablik. In a match that will long be remembered for its amateurish mistakes, Egnatia conceded four goals in the first half, with a disintegrated defense and a completely absent organization. Instead of managing the advantage, the Albanian team surrendered unconditionally, facilitating the mission of the locals who scored the fifth goal in the second half. Meanwhile, Shkëndija Tetovo secured qualification in a dramatic match in Skopje against TNS from Wales. After a 0-0 draw in the first leg, the “red and black” won 2-1 after extra time, thanks to an own goal by the opponents in the 116th minute. The Tetovo team now faces Steaua Bucharest in the next round.
For Kosovar football, the night ended on a golden page, Drita became the first club from Kosovo to advance to the first round of the Champions League.
