Two-time German Olympic biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier has died in a tragic mountain climbing accident in Pakistan. According to her manager and the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), she was hit by falling rocks on Mount Laila in the Karakoram range.
The incident occurred on Monday around noon, while she was climbing with her partner, Marina Eva, who sent an alarm signal after the incident. Due to bad weather and difficult terrain, rescue teams were unable to intervene immediately.
Dahlmeier, who retired from the sport in 2019 at the age of 25, was known for her extraordinary successes, including two gold medals at the 2018 Winter Olympics and five gold medals at a world championship.
In a touching statement, her manager said Dahlmeier had left clear instructions that no one should risk their lives to save her or recover her body in the event of an accident.
"The DOSB and all of German sport mourn the loss of Laura Dahlmeier," Thomas Weikert, President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation, said in a statement to CNN Sports.
"We are deeply shocked by the sudden and far too early death of this wonderful person. Our thoughts are with her family and friends and we will offer our support wherever we can. Laura was a role model and inspiration to many of us, both in and out of sport. She always had clear goals in mind and followed her dreams," he said.
