French police have launched an in-depth investigation after a spectacular robbery of an armored truck, which took place in Verdun-sur-Garonne, a commune about 40 kilometers from Toulouse. The van was carrying a cargo worth over 6 million euros, including works of art and gold bars. After the robbery, the perpetrators burned the van to destroy any evidence.
A woman who happened to see the suspicious vehicle in motion decided to follow it and filmed their route with her phone. She handed the video over to authorities, which helped the investigation identify the route used by the robbers.
The criminals stopped the van in an isolated area and unloaded only the part of the cargo that contained gold – about 3 million euros in gold bars and coins. Meanwhile, the works of art worth over 3.5 million euros did not attract their attention. Instead of taking them, they decided to burn them along with the van to eliminate any trace, writes A2 CNN.
Police believe the robbers had inside information, as they acted efficiently and were aware of the load and the lack of supervision. The Toulouse gendarmerie and forensic experts from Montauban found the truck completely burned. The investigation is now focused on identifying accomplices who may have helped organize the robbery and interviewing the witness who filmed the incident. (A2 Televizion)
