Marcelino Abad Tolentino, a simple farmer from Peru, celebrated his 125th birthday last weekend amidst the smiles and company of his caregivers at a nursing home. Although he doesn't have a birth certificate, he carries a national identity card issued by the Peruvian state that shows he was born on April 5, 1900.
Known by the nickname "Mashico," Marcelino has spent his life surrounded by nature, following a healthy and peaceful lifestyle, writes A2 CNN. According to the government, this life among the flora and fauna of Huánuco has contributed to his extraordinary longevity. His diet has always been rich in fruits and vegetables, and now he can't start the day without an avocado.
Raised as an orphan after his parents died in a flood when he was just 7 years old, Marcelino never married and had no children. He worked as a farmer and bricklayer for decades, living without electricity until he was 119 years old.
His story only came to light in 2019, thanks to a state program that gave him access to a pension and other social services. The Peruvian government is preparing a request for him to be officially recognized as the world's oldest man by the Guinness Book of Records.
If his age is officially confirmed, Marcelino will break the current record held by Jeanne Calment, who lived to the age of 122 years and 164 days. (A2 Televizion)
