Using a cell phone before bed increases the risk of insomnia

A new study published in the scientific journal Frontiers in Psychiatry has found that using a smartphone or tablet before bed can increase the risk of insomnia by 59%. The study was conducted in Norway with over 45,200 young people aged 18-28 and showed that it is not only blue light or social media that affects sleep, but also the time spent in front of the screen.

"What has an impact is not what we do, but the time we spend looking at the screen," explains Gunnhild Johnsen Hjetland, coordinator of the study published in "Frontiers in Psychiatry."

According to researchers, those who use their phones for at least an hour after going to bed sleep an average of 24 minutes less and have more difficulty falling asleep. The study's lead expert, Gunnhild Johnsen Hjetland, explains that screens delay the onset of sleep and reduce total sleep time.

To conduct this study, participants were asked about their phone usage habits in bed, activities they did, sleep schedule, and feelings of fatigue during the day. The researchers then divided the participants into three groups: those who did not use their phones, those who only stayed on social media, and those who performed various activities on their devices. The results clearly showed that screen time was the main factor that negatively affected sleep quality.

Experts advise avoiding the use of electronic devices at least 30-60 minutes before bedtime and disabling notifications at night for better rest. These measures can help improve sleep quality and avoid problems related to insomnia. (A2 Televizion)
