A stately home, once a symbol of luxury, is now a terrifying reminder of the power of nature on Cape Cod Bay. The 5,100-square-foot home is on the verge of collapse as erosion has eaten away at its foundation, leaving it perched atop a 25-foot cliff.

In the past, the villa had a large deck and a hot tub that offered stunning views of the ocean, writes A2 CNN. Today, its last defense is a few thin wooden planks, which barely separate the building from inevitable collapse.

Its former owner, aware of the villa's fate, had begun its partial demolition before giving up completely. The house was then sold to a salvage company, which has no intention of spending a penny to avert disaster.

Authorities in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, are concerned that the demolition will pollute the area's waters, endangering marine habitat and Cape Cod's famed shellfish industry, A2 CNN reports. A report commissioned by the authorities shows that, if no action is taken, the house will collapse within three years, possibly sooner.

Built in 2010, the villa has been at the center of a long legal battle. The former owners' attempts to build a retaining wall were rejected after experts argued it would accelerate the destruction of the coastline. (A2 Televizion)
