Researchers discover the "soul" of the oldest city in the world

Eridu, a city in southern Mesopotamia, is considered the first city to be established in the world.

Excavations carried out in the area confirm that its remains date back, at least, to 5000 BC. Throughout this time, various aspects related to the city have been discovered, and in recent days another discovery has occurred: an extensive network of canals dating back 7,000 years.

Eridu is located in southern Iraq. According to Sumerian tradition, this city is the oldest in Mesopotamia and is also considered the most advanced civilization in history.

Now, in the vicinity of Eridu, a team of researchers from Iraq's Al-Qadisiyah University has mapped 200 major canals and more than 4,000 secondary and smaller canals. Using satellite imagery, landscape analysis, and drone footage compared to historical maps, they have found human traces dating back thousands of years.

As was the case in the rest of the Mesopotamian region, the importance of the Euphrates River in Eridu was essential. With a length of about 3,000 kilometers, it helped transport water for the crops of about 1,000 farms, which were located near smaller canals. From the largest, up to nine kilometers long and five meters wide, to the smallest. (A2 Televizion)
