Prince Harry is said to have seriously considered changing his surname to Spencer, as a tribute to his mother, Diana, and perhaps as a sign of a final break with the royal family, British media report.
A revelation that adds a new and unexpected chapter to the complex saga between the Duke of Sussex and Buckingham Palace. According to the British newspaper Daily Mail, Prince Harry reportedly sought advice from his uncle, Charles Spencer, about adopting his mother's surname, Diana, writes A2 CNN.
"Harry spoke directly to his uncle, Charles Spencer, during a rare visit to the United Kingdom, asking for advice on how to legally adopt his mother's surname," a close friend of the prince told the British newspaper Daily Mail.
However, it seems that the uncle's response left no room for enthusiasm: "They had a very friendly conversation and Charles Spencer advised him not to take such a step," said the source, underlining that the legal complications would have been very numerous, reports A2 CNN.
Prince Harry would have liked to replace the surname Mountbatten-Windsor, the one assigned to his children Archie and Lilibet on their birth certificates, with a more “identifying” Spencer. A choice full of meaning, not only personal but also symbolic, which however did not materialize.
The Mountbatten-Windsor surname, chosen in 1960 for the direct descendants of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, remains a symbol of royal heritage today. But for Prince Harry, it seems, the name is no longer enough to tell the story of who he is today, or where he comes from, writes A2 CNN.
On the other hand, Harry's relationship with his father, King Charles III, and his brother William remains distant. The turning point, as we know, was his farewell to the royal family in 2020, followed by the publication of his autobiography Spare in 2023. Since then, despite several attempts at reconciliation, family relations have remained frozen. (A2 Televizion)
